What is ringworm?
Ringworm is a hair loss disease caused by fungi. Although it is called ringworm, the fungi that cause this disease can cause fungal infections in the hair, skin, nails and toes. There are two types of this disease, male and female. The so-called female shows a much faster and stronger spread than the male. It can easily settle in every part of the scalp and become permanent. Male ringworm, on the other hand, spreads more slowly and its area of influence is much narrower than the female one. Although this hair loss disease is seen in both men and women, it can occur more easily in children and adolescents. The biggest reason for this is that the body is weaker and more sensitive during this period.
How Does Ringworm Occur?
Ringworm is an immune system disease. In immune system diseases, without knowing the cause, the immune system sees its own cells as foreign and starts to fight them. As a result, the cells around the hair follicles begin to secrete chemicals called cytokines, which leads to hair loss. In other words, the body perceives its own hair follicles as foreign, sends antibodies there and the hair starts to fall out. Generally, openings begin to form on the scalp, beard and eyebrows due to shedding.
What Are the Symptoms of Ringworm?
Ringworm disease initially manifests itself as small blisters and pimples. This is the first and most important symptom of this disease. The area with the bubble spreads and expands after a while. Then the hair starts to fall out in this area. In this area, the hair becomes weak and brittle. Initially, hair loss is temporary. However, if not treated in a short time, hair loss can lead to permanent baldness. In areas with ringworm, yellow skin patches are rarely seen. However, ringworm fungus also occurs on the nails and manifests itself as nail-shaped deteriorations and differences.
What Causes Ringworm?
Many factors can be effective in the emergence of ringworm disease:
1) Genetic Factors
Genetic structure of the person plays an important role in the emergence of this disease. In addition, factors such as environmental factors, stress, viruses can also trigger the disease in these people. People who have had a case of ringworm in their family members are more likely to have the disease. Again, people with a family history of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid diseases, and other autoimmune diseases such as lupus may also be predisposed to this disease. However, the occurrence of ringworm does not mean that another immune system disease will also occur. It has been observed that asthma, anemia and thyroid diseases have been observed in people who have this disease.
2) Immune System
The immune system must always be strong enough for the body to react harshly to external threats and to protect body health. If the immune system is weakened, many diseases can easily enter the body and cause various problems.
